Brockport

About the Neighborhood

The village of Brockport, founded in 1822, calls itself "The Victorian Village on the Erie Canal." It is located within the town of Sweden. Brockport is best known for being home to SUNY Brockport College, which educates nearly 9000 students annually. Early in Erie Canal history, Brockport was the canals westernmost port before it was expanded to Buffalo, giving the village an early economic boost. Despite the past destruction of some of the villages Victorian treasures, Brockport remains undeniably scenic, whether strolling the canal-front, the historic campus at Brockport College, or the many shops and eateries contained in mid-19th-century and turn-of-the-century village storefronts. The surrounding Town of Sweden was founded in 1814, and is directly south of the Town of Clarkson. Sweden was once dense in sugar maples, making it an important source of maple syrup early in the 19th century. Although it is no longer a densely wooded area, much of Sweden still feels quite rural, owing to its deep agricultural roots.
